Orange Shirt Day

Orange Shirt Day (September 30th) is a day when we honour the Indigenous children who were sent away to residential schools in Canada and learn more about the history of those schools.

We listened to The Orange Shirt Story by Phyllis Webstad.

You can watch and hear Phyllis talking about her experiences here Phyllis' story
After listening to the story, the children were asked to do a "retell" of it to show their understanding.  Then each child was asked to think of a word or phrase to put on their orange shirt telling how EVERY CHILD should be made to feel at school.

Come and see the rest of our stories and shirts in the display case by the office and on the bulletin board outside our classroom.

Terry Fox Run

These past 2 weeks we have been talking about Terry Fox and his Marathon of Hope - his dream to run across Canada to raise money for Cancer Research.  We talked about what our dreams are.  Here are a few...

Come by our classroom some time to read all our dreams!

On Friday, September 27th, we joined the rest of Waverley School for our annual run!  Everyone tried their best and would have made Terry proud!

A Brand New School Year!

We have been in school for just a little over a week now.  It has been a busy few days as we get back into routines, get to know each others' names and just figure out what Grade Two will be like!!
Some of the things we have done so far are:
-meet new people
-learn where things are in the classroom
-enjoyed stories, songs, exercise breaks
-music and gym time
-writing stories and reviewing math concepts
-learning poems
-making our names with "bubble letters"
-drawing self portraits

Here we are working hard on our self portraits using pastels....

We looked in the mirror to help us with the details of our faces!

We were all so pleased with our finished portraits!
