We are excited to share our learning with you! Students and I will be posting news about classroom activities and our weekly spelling words. Internet safety is discussed and practiced. Happy Lunar New Year Everyone
We listened to this story and then thought about what we would do if we got some lucky money and were told we could do whatever we wanted to do with it!
Here are a few of our stories. The rest of our stories are on the bulletin board outside our classroom. Drop by and read them if you have some time!
On Friday afternoon we had the pleasure of watching a Lion Dance in our gym. It is believed that the Lion Dance scares away the evil spirits and brings good luck!
The lions are reaching for the lettuce. They got it! And then they tossed it out to the audience. It is said that if you get a piece of the lettuce, you will have good luck! Gung Hay Fat Choy! |

The Year of the Rat is coming soon!
This week we had a guest teacher come in to make rats with us for the upcoming Lunar New Year! She had all the material ready for this very tricky project.
We used paper clips and clothes pegs to hold down the spots where we glued. That way our hands were free to keep working
Mrs. Duncan had everything ready for us in individual zip lock bags! |
We carefully removed everything and checked that we had all the pieces |
Then we all got busy...stuffing, gluing, twisting! |
They are beginning to look like rats! |

Getting the shape of the ears right was tricky! |
We could twist the tails so many different ways! |
These rats are sure cuter than REAL RATS!!
When we finished making our rats, we named them and wrote a little bit about them. They are nibbling on fortune cookies! |
Thank you Mrs. Duncan for all your hard work. AND thank you for this wonderful display!

Learning about Magnets
We continue to learn about force and motion in science. This week we experimented with magnets. We first made predictions about whether or not magnets can work through different materials. Then we got magnets and tested each of the magnets' "powers" through each material... INCLUDING OUR SHOES!!
cardboard
tin cans, aluminum foil, water, and fabric
Look! It can event attract through a chair!!
.....and through plastic!
We were all surprised at all the different materials magnets can attract through - especially some of our shoes AND our hands!!

Happy New Year!
It was great to see everyone so excited to be back after our Winter break! Everyone looked well rested and was ready for our busy week!
We started the week off dancing with Anne-Michelle! She will be coming weekly to Waverley until early March! We dance with her each Monday morning!
This is called the Cowboy dance!
Also during this week, we continued talking about Force and Motion in Science. We were learning about friction! Does it take more force to move something on a rough surface or a smooth surface?
We worked in groups to test out difference surfaces to see which surfaces were the easiest and hardest to pull a block across? |
This piece of carpet is rough! |
Winter clothes...
We talked about how important it is to dress for this cold weather! Then we used our creativity to make our winter clothing!
Don't forget to dress warmly next week!
